Dr. Tererai Trent
Profile
Dr. Tererai Trent is a globally celebrated educator, humanitarian, author, and advocate whose remarkable life story has inspired millions around the world. Born in a rural village in Zimbabwe, she was initially denied formal schooling because of gender norms, yet taught herself to read and write from her brother’s books and kept her dream of education alive despite early marriage and motherhood. With persistence and vision, she moved to the United States with her family, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and a PhD, and went on to become an adjunct professor in Global Health and a senior consultant with international development expertise. Oprah Winfrey famously called her her “all time favourite guest,” and supported her educational mission with a major gift that helped build schools in Zimbabwe.
Today, Dr. Trent is the Founder of Tererai Trent International, a foundation dedicated to universal access to quality education and empowerment for girls and women in rural communities. Through strategic partnerships and grassroots programmes, her work has improved schooling opportunities for thousands of children and continues to expand opportunities across Africa. She is also a best selling author of The Awakened Woman, a motivational speaker featured on international stages including the United Nations and TEDx, and a living example of how determination and purpose can transform lives. Her journey as a mother turned global changemaker reflects resilience, hope, and the belief that dreams truly are achievable.
