Tribute / Reflection

I am building a world for my children that I wish I had grown up in. One where they are safe, heard, and free to become all that God created them to be. A world where they understand who they are, build the confidence and grit to live purpose-led lives, and ultimately leave it better than they found it. Life is about legacy and the sacred responsibility of passing the baton. My mandate to shift systems is real and relentless. But my first and most important mandate is to my little, and not so little anymore, humans. Every stage, every strategy, every late night is ultimately for them and the world they will inherit. No matter how hard it gets, those hugs, those kisses, and the “all the best” and “God bless your work, Mum” make it more than worth it every single time. I would never have expected recognition like this because, for me, being a mother is not an achievement. It is an honor I thank the Lord for daily. To be trusted to raise the next Kings and Queens of Africa is the greatest platform I will ever stand on. Nothing comes close. Thank you to Umi and the entire team for seeing what so many overlook, that motherhood and impact are not separate callings. They have always been one. And to every incredible mother pushing through each day, exhausted but present, giving your very last drop and somehow still finding more, I see you. I am you, and you are me. I love you deeply. You are doing far better than you know. Well done, Queen. Happy Mother’s Day, every day.

Profile

Khalila Sandrah Mbowe, MBA, is a Pan African systems builder and social entrepreneur designing the platforms, enterprises, and ecosystems through which Africa’s people, its youth, its creatives, and its founders move from potential into full economic participation. A mother of two young gentlemen and a young lady, her work is as personal as it is purposeful, rooted in the same conviction she holds for her own children: that every young person deserves access to the systems, opportunities, and communities that allow them to flourish. Based in Tanzania and operating across the continent, she has spent over a decade building interconnected systems at the intersection of community, technology, and enterprise, collectively influencing over 250,000 people.

Unleashed Africa operates across three interconnected brands: Beautiful You Initiative, driving gender innovation and youth empowerment for girls and young women through programmes and the RiseUp digital platform, having directly reached nearly 47,000 young people across Tanzania; Unleashed Academy JUU, building creative leadership and enterprise pathways for African creatives, having engaged over 700 creatives and organically generating over 140 million TZS in income opportunities for artists; and The Space, connecting entry to growth stage founders with world class enterprise building training and support, and through initiatives including Nipe Dili, having supported 117 entrepreneurs and contributed to over 700 jobs, collectively influencing over 250,000 people across the continent.

RiseUp is Africa’s first gender tech empowerment platform, a hybrid digital community ecosystem designed as a one stop safe space for girls and young women, connecting them to opportunities, mentorship, skills development, and supportive communities. Built on the conviction that talent exists everywhere but opportunity ecosystems do not, RiseUp bridges the digital and physical divide to reach young women across backgrounds and geographies, and is scaling to empower 7 million adolescent girls and young women and youth across Africa by 2030.

Alongside her work at Unleashed Africa, Khalila has served as Country Director and Global Production Director at Girl Effect, leading large scale social and behavioural change programmes across Tanzania, and has held consultancy and advisory roles across media, development programming, and communications. She also serves on the Research Advisory Group for a UK funded participatory action research project on youth wellbeing, healthy relationships, and GBV prevention in Tanzania.

An in demand international speaker and moderator, Khalila has contributed to high level dialogue at the United Nations, the Raisina Dialogue, and global innovation forums. She is a Raisina Young Fellow, Acumen Fellow, Ashoka East Africa Visionary Leaders Programme Fellow, and WEF Global Shapers Curator. She was recognised among Tanzania’s Top 100 Changemakers in 2025 and is a UN Global Compact SME Award winner (2024). As a mother of two young gentlemen and a young lady, her work is animated by a deep sense of stewardship, building the systems and opportunities that her children and countless others across the continent will grow into.
