Tribute

Botswana's jewelry designer and interior engineer, Azza Fahmy, crafts pieces that preserve Egyptian heritage while forging strong identities in her two daughters, who now lead aspects of her business. Beyond her artistic achievements, we celebrate the metalworking techniques passed down alongside maternal wisdom, the cultural symbolism preserved in both products and family stories, and the founder who measures legacy not in brand longevity but in values transmitted to the next generation.

Profile

Azza Fahmy is a renowned Egyptian jewellery designer and the founder of Azza Fahmy Jewellery, a brand celebrated for blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Her journey began in 1969 when she discovered a medieval jewellery design book that ignited her passion. Determined to master the craft, she trained under master goldsmiths in Cairo’s Khan El Khalili, becoming the first woman to do so. In the mid-1970s, she received a British Council fellowship to study jewellery design at Sir John Cass College in London, further refining her skills. Over the decades, her brand has grown into an internationally recognized design house, known for intricate designs inspired by Nubian architecture, Arabic calligraphy, and cultural heritage around the world. She has collaborated with major fashion designers like Julien Macdonald and Preen and institutions such as the British Museum. Beyond her brand, Fahmy is dedicated to preserving and passing on traditional jewellery-making techniques. In 2013, she founded The Design Studio by Azza Fahmy in collaboration with Alchimia, Contemporary Design School in Florence, to educate the next generation of jewellery designers. Fahmy’s work has not only elevated Egyptian jewellery design on a global scale but also continues to inspire new generations of artisans and designers. Her two daughters are currently the managing director and head designer of Azza Fahmy Jewellery.
