Tribute

While Sindiso Khumalo designs sustainable fashion collections that honour her Botswana and South African heritage, her most enduring creations are the two children whose characters she's crafting with the same attention to detail she brings to her textiles. We celebrate the stories she has told her two children that weave Zulu and Ndebele traditions into modern contexts, the patient stitching together of confidence after childhood disappointments, their dreams architecturally supported alongside her husband, and the beautiful patterns of family life she has established despite fashion's demanding schedule.

Profile

Sindiso Khumalo is a fashion and textile designer renowned for her sustainable and culturally rich designs. Born in Botswana and raised in Durban, South Africa, she pursued architecture at the University of Cape Town before obtaining a Master’s degree in Textile Futures from Central Saint Martins in London. She also worked with acclaimed architect David Adjaye. In 2014, Khumalo launched her eponymous fashion brand, focusing on sustainable textiles and African storytelling. Her designs often feature handwoven fabrics and original watercolor prints, reflecting her Zulu and Ndebele heritage. She collaborates with artisans across Africa, including communities in Burkina Faso and South Africa, to create her textiles. Sindiso’s work has garnered international recognition, leading to showcases at Milan Fashion Week and exhibitions at prestigious venues like London’s Royal Albert Hall and The Smithsonian Museum of African Art in Washington D.C. In 2020, she was a finalist for the LVMH Prize and received the Green Carpet Fashion Award for Best Independent Designer. Sindiso Khumalo is married to Edward McCann, an architect. Together, they have two children.
