Winifred Byanyima is a distinguished Ugandan figure, celebrated for her multifaceted roles as an aeronautical engineer, politician, human rights activist, feminist, and diplomat. Since November 2019, she has served as the Executive Director of UNAIDS, following a notable tenure as the Executive Director of Oxfam International from May 2013 to November 2019.
Prior to her leadership at Oxfam, Byanyima held the position of Director of the Gender Team in the Bureau for Development Policy at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) starting from 2006.
Byanyima is married to Kizza Besigye, with whom she shares a son named Anselm. Their union is rooted in Nsambya, Kampala, reflecting a commitment to family alongside her illustrious career achievements.
