Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu

Growing up in a modest neighbourhood in Addis Ababa, entrepreneur Bethlemen Tilahun Alemu witnessed first-hand the poverty faced by many in her community, along with their untapped artisanal skills. Motivated by this realization, she embarked on a mission to harness these skills and transform them into a thriving business, leading to the establishment of SoleRebels in 2004. This eco-friendly footwear manufacturer not only provides livelihoods for hundreds of locals but also promotes sustainability in its practices.

Under Bethlehem’s leadership, SoleRebels has evolved into one of Africa’s largest footwear companies, expanding its reach to become a successful global enterprise. With flagship stores spanning across Taiwan, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, the U.S., Singapore, Japan, and numerous other countries, the brand has made a significant impact on the international market. Bethlehem’s dedication to empowering Ethiopian youth has garnered widespread recognition. In 2011, she was honored as one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders, acknowledging her outstanding contributions to society. Additionally, Forbes has hailed her as one of Africa’s 20 Youngest Power Women and included her among the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.

Beyond her professional achievements, Bethlehem is also a devoted mother of three children, balancing her entrepreneurial endeavors with her family responsibilities.
